3.2. Explain the actions to take if an individual alleges that they are being abused

You should be sensitive to the issues raised by any individual who comes to tell you they have been mistreated and accept their storey. When they want to expand upon their ideas, treat them with respect and assert that they’ve made the correct decision. However, you should not make any promises you are unable to fulfil. Regardless of whether the individual wants you to keep it confidential, you must nonetheless comply with organisational policies and procedures. Ensure that they convey this message to the offending party so you do not risk more violence or injury.

The organisation will have laid out the procedures in which you are expected to take if you become aware of workplace abuse, which you should follow if such disclosures are made. Each time an employee misuses personal information, all steps must be taken in a timely and mutually agreed manner to do so. Covered under our proposed legislation, you might be made vulnerable to having your manager or company found guilty of mismanagement. This means that, if they are found guilty, you may have to alert legal authorities, social services, such as the police, or the Care Quality Commission (CQC). Your organisation should have a whistleblowing procedure that should serve as your guiding principle.

But make no effort to examine the claims or deal with the individuals who made them yourself; this is the responsibility of the experts such as the police or social services. As soon as it is practicable, you should put something down in writing, which is on paper what you’ve been taught. So, check the facts, and make sure the information is correct, and don’t include your own opinions or stories. The final agreement should also be signed and dated.

You should always believe your colleague when they tell you that they have been a victim of abuse and work with them to expand the area of their role.” Try to reassure the person that this, while showing them that they have done the right thing and that you are going to make every effort to ensure they will not be victimised further. Even if they urge you to keep it a secret, you should not do so; instead, you have a duty to convey the knowledge to them in order to protect the next victim or to prevent future harm from occurring.

To begin with, make sure they are safe should be your main concern. Preserving any evidence should be added to your list of priorities. The best practice is to make it as soon as possible so that your management is immediately aware of your suspicions and actions are carried out under the corporate safety protocol. It is highly recommended that you keep a written record of the disclosure. If your boss fails to meet your needs, your concern, you should follow the procedure to report your issues and deal with them through the manager’s chain of command to your superiors.
