6.3. Support an individual in a way that promotes their sense of identity, self-image and self-esteem

When an individual feels supported by others, they are more likely to feel confident in themselves and their abilities. This can lead to a positive cycle in which the individual feels more motivated to succeed and be a productive member of society.

Conversely, when individuals do not feel supported or affirmed, they may struggle with low self-esteem and feelings of worthlessness. This can often lead to disruptive or destructive behaviors. It is our responsibility as caregivers, friends, family members, and community members to provide support to all individuals in a way that promotes their sense of identity, self-image, and self-esteem.

It is important for caregivers and community members to understand that people who experience mental illnesses will not always be able to control themselves and their behavior. It may seem as though these individuals constantly make poor choices, but we must consider the fact that they are experiencing a severe disorder.

We cannot look at them with judgment or anger; instead, we should try to understand the fact that their behavior is most likely being influenced by their illness. Individuals experiencing psychotic disorders, for example, may hear “voices” or have delusional thoughts. These thoughts may cause them to behave erratically or aggressively.

Additionally, people with severe depression experience guilt and hopelessness that can lead them to harm themselves in some way. Any of these behaviors are completely beyond the individual’s control.

Individuals experiencing mental health issues are more likely to be unemployed, have less educational attainment, and receive lower pay than individuals who do not experience mental illness. These factors can accumulate into low self-esteem and feelings of worthlessness.

It is our responsibility as community members to help people who experience mental health issues find employment and attain a high level of education. In order to do this, we must work together as a society to end the stigma surrounding mental illness. This will allow people to openly seek out resources that can help them receive quality care from trained professionals.
