2.3 Reflect on day to day work practice

Reflection has been called the most powerful and often overlooked skill. When we take time to reflect on our work, it’s important not only ask ourselves why something isn’t working well but also how can improve that aspect of care for those in need – as well looking at tasks from earlier stages with older clients so they know processes have changed over a period because this helps reduce vulnerability or overwhelm when faced new situations later down line.

Reflection is time for individuals to make sense of what has happened and understand how it can be improved. It allows us to look back at events that have happened in the past; why this may have occurred; was there anything we could’ve done to prevent it?

Reflection is also a key skill in improving your own practice, especially when working with older people, as they often require more care. Personal reflection skills are essential for this reason, since we cannot ask an older person “How did you feel about that? But we can ask ourselves when we look back at a situation.

Reflecting on the client is not only helpful for clients, but is also a way to learn more about their needs and how you can better support them in the future. When faced with a new challenge ask yourself – what would I do in similar circumstances? What worked well? What didn’t work so well? Why not?

Reflective practice is a method of learning through critical thinking, active participation and openness. This many not be too helpful for those new to the profession or who work in private care homes as they are expected to take on board their training (though it doesn’t need to all happen at once), however reflection is a valuable tool for those at the top and bottom of learning.

Good reflective practice:

• Is open, honest and self-critical
• Seeks to improve standards of care through seeing things from different viewpoints
• Contributes to improving working practices
• Involves individuals in their own development process
• Presumes a professional, ethical responsibility to provide a certain standard of care
• Respects the client’s independence and choice
• Acknowledges our shared humanity which underpins all working relationships
• Embraces diversity of thought and values
• Preserves confidentiality. (NMC 2009)

Here are some questions you can ask yourself when reflecting:

• What did I learn from this situation?
• Did I manage the situation well in the end and if not, why didn’t it go to plan?
• How can I be more prepared next time around?
• Was there anything else I could have done to help resolve the problem at hand?
• How can I improve my skills?
• What else could have been considered before taking this course of action?
• Do I need any further training? If so, what type of training is required to help me in the future?

Good quality reflective practice needs to be more than just a one off. It needs to be consistently occurring throughout time, as that is the only way we can truly learn from our experiences and grow into the practitioner we want to become. If your workplace does not encourage reflection or support it in a helpful way, try setting up a reflective journal with a colleague or friend so you can share reflections together.
