Activity 4.1a

Explain the below key terminology in your own words.

Diversity

When we understand that each person is different, we can better accept them for who they are and what they want. We must also be patient in accepting their differences, as understanding them will eventually lead to accepting themselves, which in turn will lead to improved relationships and sessions.

Equality

The word equality is often misunderstood. Equality does not mean that all people are the same or act the same. Equality means that everyone should have equal rights and opportunities.

Education is a very powerful tool in helping us to understand and accept one another. Without it, we could never hope to see equality in our society, as we would be so busy judging one another based on what we perceive as “normal”.

Inclusion

The equal opportunity administrator is responsible for ensuring that all individuals have the opportunity to participate, be included regardless of their differences. The Administrator also works to ensure that programs and activities provide an accurate and fair representation of all attendees, including those who identify as different from themselves.

Discrimination

Discrimination is the denial of rights because of one’s differences. This includes discrimination based on gender, race, ethnicity, age, disability, sexual orientation, religion and socio-economic status.

Activity 4.1b

Discrimination may happen deliberately or by mistake within a social care or health setting. For each of the examples below, describe the discrimination that is happening including whether it is deliberate or inadvertent.

Example 1: A community group organizes activities in a village hall that does not have access that is suitable for individuals who are wheelchair users.

The group does things like walking the dog, going for walks, and keeping the village community organized. It also helps with cultural events such as village screenings of a movie or playing games. Village members can be lonely and don’t get out much, so this group makes life easier for them.

Example 2: In a hospital, a volunteer gives smaller portions of food to women than men because they believe that men have bigger appetites

It is when people make decisions based on personal beliefs instead of professional standards. This can be seen in organizations that refuse to hire females, or give them less pay than males for equal work; this practice is called “gender bias.”.

Example 3: A care home has a policy that limits kitchen hours from 8 am to 5 pm. A new resident observes Ramadan, meaning they can eat only before sunrise and after sunset. As a result of the kitchen policy, they are not able to eat proper meals for the month of Ramadan.

A care home is discriminating against its new resident by not accommodating their religious beliefs. Furthermore, they are promoting a cold and unkind atmosphere where people aren’t valued for who they really want to be anymore; however, there are some changes happening! We’re providing some support for the person’s religious beliefs!

Example 4: A home care worker stays longer at the home of an individual than they should because they are fond of the individual which means that the next person has less time for their care and support.

The care home is discriminating against its new resident by not accommodating their religious beliefs. They are also promoting a cold and unkind atmosphere, where people aren’t valued for who they really want to be anymore.

Activity 4.1c

There are a number of ways that can help to reduce the likelihood of discrimination happening in the workplace. Explain how practices that support equality and diversity, such as working in a person-centered way, can help to reduce discrimination in the workplace.

Some workplace practices that support equality and diversity include having an equal number of workers from each gender, benching different pay rates for succeeding generations, and keeping employee information confidential. Workplaces where people from all backgrounds are included often have less discrimination and more open times, which helps everyone in the workplace.

Additionally, working with a person-centered approach to work can help reduce discrimination and its effects on individuals and teams. This way, it is easier for employees to feel comfortable discussing feelings or concerns they experience while working, making decisions. They see happening around them and connect with others outside of their workgroup.

Activity 4.2a

Identify which legislation and codes of practice or conduct relating to equality, diversity, and discrimination apply to you as a care worker.

There are a number of laws and codes of practice or conduct that apply to care, workers. Generally, these include:

Care workers must use their skills and knowledge in a person-centered way, which means they take into account the needs of the individual as well as their own feelings, experiences, and beliefs.

Codes of conduct such as the Equality Act 2010 and The Equalities Act 2010 (as amended) both require employers to take reasonable steps to prevent discrimination in the workplace. This includes ensuring that there is no discrimination against employees based on things like gender reassignment.

The Care Standards Act 2000 requires all organizations that provide care services for older people or disabled people to have an equal opportunities policy, which can be a code of conduct. There are also specific codes of practice that apply to all care workers, including those working in residential care homes, psychiatric hospitals, and nursing homes.

Activity 4.2c

Reflect on the two examples of discriminatory practices below. For each example, describe how you could address the discriminatory practice in order to encourage positive change.

An individual you are supporting is unable to reach the counter at the checkout to pay for their shopping:

If the staff member is not able to resolve the issue, you can email them for assistance. If they are unable to help, you can report the issue to a store manager. If the staff member is able to resolve the issue and you are still not happy with their response, you can escalate the issue to a store manager or HR. If you are still unhappy with your experience, you can complain about it to a local council.

You notice a colleague continuously refuses to support or treat an individual and they have said it is because of the individual’s sexual orientation:

The individual is not paying attention to their personal laws and customs. They are instead focused on following their own. This becomes clear when the person is told about certain specific laws that pertain to them, such as race or gender identity. If the individual was to continue doing what they are doing, it would be discriminatory and unethical.
