Case study
A close friend and former colleague, Charlotte, has recently been appointed as Head of People at Camellia, a plant-based cosmetics company, in its UK division. Charlotte has identified several areas that require her immediate attention: recruitment and selection, onboarding, reward, and learning and development. She has called to tell you that after her first Senior Management Team (SMT) meeting, she experienced an embarrassing situation. A member of the SMT called her over and commented that, unlike other departments, the People Department has never been very proficient at using and presenting data insights, but the SMT felt her appointment would change this. She now knows that she must improve the way that data is gathered and analysed, in addition to the priority areas she had already identified as needing action.
As you work for Analytics Insights, a company that specialises in people practice data analysis, she calls to get your thoughts and ideas on how she might address this situation. You tell her that you are happy to help and ask her to send some questions on the areas that need to be covered, along with a spreadsheet that shows raw data from a recent pulse survey.
Charlotte is very appreciative and thanks you for your support. She explains that as the People Team at Camellia is fairly new and inexperienced, responses to the following tasks would greatly assist them in developing a sound understanding of evidence-based practice.
Task one – Questions
Q1. Evaluate the concept of evidence-based practice, including two examples of where Camellia’s People Team could use it to ensure sound decision-making in people practice. (AC 1.1)
Q2. Evaluate one appropriate analysis tool and one appropriate analysis method that Camellia might apply to diagnose issues, challenges, and opportunities. (AC 1.2)
Q3. Explain to Camellia’s People Team the main principles of critical thinking, including how these might be applied at Camellia. (AC 1.3)
Q4. Explain at least two decision-making processes that Camellia’s People Team could apply to ensure that effective outcomes are achieved. (AC 1.4)
Q5. Assess how at least two different ethical perspectives could influence decision-making by the People Team at Camellia. (AC 1.5)
Q6. Appraise one way that Camellia’s People Team could measure financial performance and one way that Camellia’s People Team could measure non-financial performance. (AC 3.1)
Q7. Explain how recruitment and selection activities might add value at Camellia and two methods that might be used to measure the impact and value of these activities. (AC 3.2)
Your evidence must consist of:
- Q1 to Q7 should total approximately 2900 words. The acceptable word count range for this assessment is 3510 (-10%) to 4290 words (+10%). Any assessment that exceeds 4290 words will be automatically referred, in line with the CIPD word count policy.
- References should be included within each of your answers and full details presented in a reference list or bibliography at the end of your assessment.
