MKT6045 Assessment Brief
As the new Sustainability Manager at Birmingham City University (BCU), you have been asked to deliver a presentation to the Head of Sustainability that outlines the sustainability issues within the Higher Education industry and make recommendations to address one or more of these issues within BCU.
Assessment Tasks
Produce and deliver a business presentation that addresses ALL the following elements:
1) Using an appropriate framework, identify key sustainability issues associated with the Higher Education sector AND assess the extent to which BCU is addressing these issues in relation to competitors within the region.
[30 marks, approx. 5 mins]
2) Focusing on one or more of the sustainability issues identified in Task 1, provide detailed recommendations for how BCU could become more sustainable.
[30 marks, approx. 5 mins]
3) Design a behavioural change campaign aimed at promoting sustainable behaviours amongst students OR staff at BCU, including mock-ups of campaign materials.
[30 marks, approx. 5 mins]
All recommendations should be justified and relevant theories and frameworks should be used throughout the plan to communicate your ideas.
NOTE: An additional 10 marks are available for the level of professionalism evident in your work, including presentation skills, slide design and use of Harvard referencing.
Things to include
Your work should reflect the assessment scenario, i.e. that of a manager who is delivering a presentation to the Senior Management Team.
Presentations should be structured as follows:
- Title slide – Should contain the company logo, presentation title, presentation date, who the presentation is to (i.e. Senior Management Team) and who it is from (your name and student ID)
- Agenda – Should include section headers
- Introduction – Should establish context and outline the presentation purpose
| Completion of this assessment will address the following learning outcomes: | |
| 1 | Critique the social, economic and ecological factors within the marketing environment that are driving the need for pro-sustainable behaviour and ethical decision-making |
| 2 | Evaluate the extent to which organisations are currently addressing the sustainability challenges facing their industry |
| 3 | Create activities that an organisation could implement in order to reduce its impact on the planet and on society |
| 4 | Apply appropriate transferable skills that are essential to a career in business, such as commercial awareness and communication skills. |
- Individual sections for each task – Should use section/slide headings that relate to the task (e.g. ‘Introduction, Sustainability issues within Higher Education, etc.’)
- Closing comments – Should provide a summary of the presentation and any conclusions/recommendations
- References – A list of sources used, with inline citations being used within the body of the presentation for every fact or academic concept stated
You will NOT be allowed to use any form of script or cue cards during delivery and marks will be deducted for reading the text on presentation slides as if it was a script.
Referencing Style
Harvard referencing must be used to identify the source of all facts, concepts and theories used in your document. More information on referencing is available via the library referencing guide.
