Unit Aims

Having hard management and soft leadership skills is often stated by employers as being key to the success of a business but few people have sufficient quantities of both to make a significant impact on business operations and strategy. The aim of this unit, therefore, is to support a learners understanding of leadership as a role and management as a function so that they are able to develop the knowledge, skills and traits to make a meaningful contribution to a business’s success.

3.4 Discuss the role of motivation theories in improving individual and team performance.

4.2 Assess own ability to improve knowledge and skills to be an effective leader and manager.

Scenario

One day you hope to be in a role where you are both a leader and a manager of people.  You understand that to be an effective leader and manager it is important to develop sufficient and appropriate leadership and management skills.

To support your understanding of leadership and management and to help you prepare for a future leadership and management role, you have volunteered to work in a local business you are familiar with.  In return the business will provide real on the job leadership and management training and development.

A mentor has been appointed to support you by setting you a series of tasks.

Task 1

Assignment Brief and Guidance
Your first task, which focuses on leadership and management fundamentals, is to produce an essay which must;

● differentiate between leadership and management.

● explain key leadership theories.

● explain key management theories.

● explain leadership and management styles

Delivery and Submission
The submission should be in the form of an essay written in Word format. The recommended word limit is 500 words excluding diagrams, references, and appendices
Referencing  
You are expected to use relevant academic and reliable sources, and clearly reference these in your work.

Citations should be added to the text and placed at the end in a reference list, using the Harvard referencing style.

Task 2

Assignment Brief and Guidance
Your second task, which focuses on team development, is to produce and deliver a presentation which must;

● explain what is meant by the term ‘team development.’

● explain what is meant by the term ‘high performance team.’

● compare different team development models.

Delivery and Submission
The recommended presentation time is 10 minutes which is equivalent to a word limit of 500 words excluding diagrams, references, and appendices.

You are to provide a copy of the notes you use to support the delivery of the presentation.

Referencing  
You are expected to use relevant academic and reliable sources, and clearly reference these in your work.

Citations should be added to the text and placed at the end in a reference list, using the Harvard referencing style.

Task 3

Your third task, which focuses on improving individual and team performance, is to produce a report which must;

● explain techniques which could be used by the business to improve the performance of its individual employees and teams.

● explain why it is important to the business that its employees improving their own performance.

● explain why it is important to the business that its employees and teams are effective.

● discuss the role of at least three motivation theories which could be used as the basis to help improve the performance of employees and teams who work in the business.

Delivery and Submission
The submission should be in the form of a report written in Word format. The recommended word limit is 1250 words excluding diagrams, references, and appendices

You are expected to use relevant academic and reliable sources, and clearly reference these in your work. Citations should be added to the text and placed at the end in a reference list, using the Harvard referencing style.

Task 4

Assignment Brief and Guidance
This final task focuses on you and your ability to be an effective leader and/or manager.

You are to produce a portfolio of evidence which must contain;

● a minimum of three self-assessments which focus on relevant leadership and management skills,

● a record of reflections which you produce during this unit, and which are based on your learning

● an assessment of your own ability to improve your knowledge and skills to be an effective leader and manager.

Delivery and Submission
The submission should be in the form of a portfolio of evidence which is supported by three self-assessments and a series of reflections inserted as appendices.

The portfolio has an equivalent word limit of 750 words.
