Unit 41: Traditional And Specialist Secondary Machining Processes In Manufacturing BTEC Level 3
| Subject | Mechanical Engineering |
Learning aim(s)
(For NQF/RQF only)
Learning aim A – Examine the technology and characteristics of secondary machining processes that are widely used in industry.
Vocational Scenario or Context
An employer wants to buy some new traditional and specialist secondary machinery and has asked you to undertake some work by gathering information on turning/milling/grinding and drilling machinery and for specialist secondary machinery Spark erosion machine, presswork, broaching, honing and lapping machines.
In preparation, you have been asked to outline and describe the functions of the machines, tools and the selection of work holding devices.
Do You Need Assignment of This Question
Task 1
• Produce a written report in detail how Traditional secondary machines and Specialist secondary machines processes are used to manufacture components.
List of Traditional secondary machines processes
Centre lathe, milling machine, drilling machine and
surface grinder
- Describe how a Centre lathe, milling machine, drilling machine and surface grinder function when machining a component (include a list of main parts on each machine)
- Name the different work holding devices and cutting tools used on a Centre lathe, milling machine, drilling machine and a surface grinder nwhen machining a component.
- Name the different features that can be produced on a Centre lathe, milling machine, drilling machine and a surface grinder when machining a component.
List of Specialist secondary machines processes
Spark erosion machine, presswork, broaching, honing and lapping
- Describe how a Spark erosion machine, presswork, broaching, honing and lapping function when producing a machined component.
- Name the different features that can be produced on a Spark erosion machine, presswork, broaching, honing and lapping function when producing a component.
- Explain the sustainability characteristics of secondary machines when producing a component.
- Produce a written report on how different traditional and specialist secondary machining processes are used to maintain accuracy when manufacturing different features on components.
- Explain the role of the setter and operator when producing batch work in an engineering environment, to include how accuracy is maintained and how the
correct handover procedure is used when continuously producing accurate components (to include using stops to set cutters and lathe toolbits, use of plug and gap gauges to check for accuracy, role of the inspection department) - Produce a written report using engineering technical language and terms used to evaluate the contrasting differences between traditional and specialist secondary machining processes when manufacturing components in different batch sizes and how the quality and accuracy is maintained during the processes.
