Assignment Outline

Choose two banks which is publicly listed within the same country and conduct a comparative analysis. You’re required to collect the last four years of relevant data (financial statements, regulatory sources, market, and industry reports) and economic data from reliable sources, as well as apply the appropriate concepts and models learnt in the module. Provide well-researched answers supported by relevant information and analysis.

Required:

1. Compare, analyse and evaluate the performance of those two banks in areas of profitability, credit risk and liquidity risk using appropriate ratios and metrics over the last four fiscal years with the support of appropriate diagrams and tables (clearly labelled). Explain the patterns and provide possible reasons for the results in your main report. Show your workings in appendix.

2. Identify and critically discuss the interest rate risk and liquidity risk exhibit at those chosen banks. Evaluate if and how any of those risks discussed above could be reduced by those banks. Discuss with the consideration of their financial strength, macroeconomic and regulatory environment.

3. Critically evaluate the rationale and effectiveness of the international financial regulations. Cover at least 3 academic articles on the topic.

4. Your report should include a title page with the actual names of two chosen companies and a page for the executive summary (no more than 100 words) to highlight your key findings. The report should be presented in the required format (refer to Format of Coursework).

Format of Coursework

  1. Anonymous marking applies: do NOT include your name or student number within the filename or anywhere within your report.
  2. Save your report using the Bank A’s name as the filename (e.g. A.doc).
  3. Screenshots of Excel spreadsheet, data and all relevant calculations where necessary should be stored in Appendix of the coursework.
  4. The data for the study must be obtained from reliable sources, such as the official websites of those banks, stock exchange, company reports, public website or reports, periodicals, financial data systems. You are expected to make full use of all the facilities offered by the University libraries and other sources. Examples of other sources of information include the Yahoo Finance, Financial Times, the Economist, Investors’ Chronicle, Fame database, Bloomberg, DataStream, Excel cards and databases.
  5. In the case of company-related information and other documentary data, copies of the relevant pages of annual reports or financial-information sheets should be attached in an appendix at the back of the report.
  6. The report is 2000 words (±10%) excluding appendices, table of contents, and reference list, with size 12 font and 1.5 line spacing for the main text.
  7. The rules on late submission and plagiarism are applied and fully enforced by the School: Section 10: Academic misconduct (westminster.ac.uk).
  8. List of References should be included if any materials were cited in the report, following the Westminster Harvard Referencing Style. Appendices may be used where necessary to include relevant definitions or data.
