Question
This question is the first of your course work assignments for the B99TG Introduction to Process Technology course. The question will be marked out of 100%. The mark from this question will count as 30% of your final course mark (the remaining 70% is from the second assignment). The deadline for submission is Monday 20th October 2025 at 12 noon. The assignment should be submitted through the submission portal that will be opened on the B99TG Vision pages.
- The steady-state process shown in Fig. 1 is used to extract oil from soybeans. The feed is 2.3 kg/min and contains 37% oil, 45% protein and 18% fibre. The stream of protein and fibre leaving the process contains 3.0% hexane. The recycle stream 4 from the oil recovery section has a flow rate of 7.4 kg/min. Pure hexane is used as solvent. Assume that the oil recovery section gives a perfect separation of hexane and oil. Assume that all the oil is extracted from the feed and that no protein or fibre is carried over into stream 3. All percentages are on a mass basis.
(a). Calculate the flow rate and composition of stream 2.
(b). Calculate the flow rate of stream 6.
(c). Calculate the flow rate of stream 5.
(d). Calculate the concentration of oil in the recycle stream 3.
