Name of assessment: Reflective Commentary
Short description: A 2000-word reflective commentary of a case-study simulation that took place in the seminar.
Weighting: 60%
Due date: 29/06/26 before 3pm
Formative feedback date: 25/05/26
Feedback release date: 4 weeks after the final submission date
Assessment Guidance
You are required to write a 2000-word reflective commentary of a case-study simulation that took place in the seminar.
A case study is a description of a real-life issue or situation that requires you to reflect on and analyse the main issues involved.
The aim is to identify the issues and discuss them from your own point of view by relating these issues to academic literature on the topic,
draw conclusions about why the issues occurred, and consider how best to respond to them.
A case study simulation is an opportunity to apply (use) theoretical knowledge from academic literature,
as well as your own reflections, to real-life situations you may come across in health and social care professional contexts.
Writing a reflective commentary of a case study simulation enables you to:
- Reflect on the details and complexities of issues in real-life situations.
- Apply (use) the knowledge gained from your academic reading of topics covered in the lectures and seminars.
- Discuss your experience of the case study simulation and draw conclusions for a professional response to it.
Step 1: Before you start writing your reflective commentary, you need to:
a) Choose ONE Case study simulation to work on (** these will be presented in the Seminars)
b) identify and make a note of the main issues and challenges the case study presents.
c) identify and make a note of the main stakeholders (individuals, professionals, and/or groups who might have an interest in the case)
d) Go through your lecture and seminar notes, and your reflective journal, and identify the theories, concepts and academic literature you have covered and read about (or you will need to read about) on topics that relate to the main issues you have identified in the case study.
e) Read through the theories, concepts and academic literature to make sure you properly understand them and make notes of how you will use them to reflect on your experience of and discuss the main issues identified in the case study simulation.
Step 2: Writing your reflective commentary
Your reflective commentary should include all of the following 4 elements: introduction, description, reflective discussion and conclusion.
The suggested word count for each section below is only a suggestion; you can have more or less of the suggested word count for any of the sections, so long as the whole is up to 2000 words.
Introduction (150 – 200 words): begin by defining the main purpose of the case study simulation and briefly outline the overall problem in the case study that needs to be solved.
Description (200- 250 words): write a brief description of the case study by giving a summary of the main issues, challenges identified and the main stakeholders. Assume the reader knows nothing of the assessment task and provide enough information to give a context for your reflections and discussion.
Reflective discussion (1200 – 1400): discuss the main issues identified using information gained from your academic reading, and discuss your own reflections on your experience of the case study simulation.
Conclusion (250–350 words): summarise the conclusions you have come to and present recommendations for resolving the case (for each recommendation, you should also go further to provide a reason why you suggest each recommendation).
Reference list
This is a reference list of all the academic and non-academic literature you have used in the reflective commentary.
A reference list is not a bibliography. A bibliography is a list of all you have read and all you have used. But the reference list is only a list of all you have used and cited in this work.
Use the Harvard Referencing Style to arrange your reference list.
* You are expected to reference readings studied on the module in your coursework.
Upload your coursework to the submission link by the due date of May 11 2026 by 3pm. in a Word file, as instructed.
