Unit Aims
This unit aims to provide an overview of web development. Learners will gain knowledge and understanding on how to plan, develop, test and launch a website. Learners will develop an understanding of engaging users and the inclusion of databases within websites.
Assignment Tasks
You are a Web Developer working for a website consultancy business. The consultancy has been appointed to design a new website for a dental practice.
The dental practice does not currently have a website and they have asked that the website is responsive in design and allows patients to register for the practice and book an appointment. The practice would also like to be able to run reports to show the appointments booked by patients.
You have been tasked by your manager to look at planning, designing, producing, testing and implementing the website.
Your manager has also asked that the completed website is hosted online in a test environment before going live.
Task 1 – Website planning
You have been assigned the project to complete by your manager and they have asked you to begin planning for the website. You will need to prepare a plan for the entire website. Your manager will approve the plan before you are allowed to continue with the actual development of the website.
Your plan should include:
- An outline of why it is important for the website to be responsive for the client
- An explanation of different methods that can be used to create a website and which method you will be using
- A storyboard design for each page of the website
- An explanation of the tools required for the website development and the language that can be used for website development
- An explanation of website design issues that need to be considered
Extension activities:
To gain a merit grade you must also include in your plan:
- An explanation of the benefits of using a storyboard design when developing the dental practice website
To gain a distinction grade you must also include in your plan:
- An analysis of the impact of designing the website without sufficient pre-planning
LO1 AC 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, 1.4, 1.5, 1.6, 1M1, 1D1
Task 2 – Design and implementation of the website
Your manager has now approved you to begin the development of the website. Based on your plan in Task 1 produce a website containing the following:
- a range of webpages linked together with a clear navigation method
- A style sheet for the website
- Pages containing a range of media content throughout the website
- A database linked to the website in order to store patient details as per the brief
- Queries and lookups to meet the dental practice requirements
The database should allow staff to run reports from a staff only area of the website:
- List of patients
- Future appointments
- Past appointments
Once you have completed the above tasks create a document for your manager
- Explaining how the database is structured on the website
- Describing the laws and regulations that have been considered as part of your development
Extension activities:
To gain a merit grade you must also include in your document for your manager:
- an evaluation on the impact that laws, regulations and standards have on the design of the website
To gain a distinction grade you must also include on the website:
- features that provide additional functionality in the webpage development
LO2 AC 2.1, 2.2, 2.3, 2.4, 2.5, 2.6, 2.7, 2M1, 2D1
Task 3 – Testing the website
You have now been asked to test the website to ensure it is fit for purpose and meets the client’s requirements from the original brief.
You have been asked to complete the below activities and evidence each within a document for submission to your manager:
- Create a test plan for the website detailing the tests you are going to complete
- Explain the reasons for testing a website and the testing method you have chosen to use
- Test the website using the test plan and evidence the outcome of each test along with the end result
- Amend the website based on the results of user testing if required
LO3 AC 3.1, 3.2, 3.3, 3.4
Task 4 – Publishing the website
Please obtain your FTP username and password details from your tutor prior to starting this task.
The website has now been completed, approved and is ready to publish online. Your manager has tasked you with the below actions:
- Produce a ‘How to guide’ describing the process you are using to publish the website online and create a guide for the client to do this themselves if they wish to make small changes to the website in the future.
- The client is considering purchasing a range of domain names and additional hosting, explain in a document the purpose of a domain name to the client and describe the website hosting considerations the client should make.
- Setup and configure a web hosting solution for the client so that the website can be hosted online
- Using the hosting login details provided by your manager upload the website using FTP. Evidence your upload using screenshots in a document.
LO4 AC 4.1, 4.2, 4.3, 4.4, 4.5
