2. Traditional Measurement and Bill of Quantities Preparation

Assessment Overview

Today, most bills of quantities are produced using proprietary software packages, each system having its own format for inputting dimensions and formulating descriptions. However, knowledge of measurement conventions is useful to fully understand and appreciated potential problems in the measurement process. The ability to take off manually is an essential skill for any Quantity Surveyor.

Scenario

The construction industry is and will continue to be, a key driver of economic recovery as we move back towards normality, and it is critical that the industry plays its part in this recovery and create a more diverse sector. Land availability has become increasingly problematic for smaller firms. Everyone needs access to secure, decent housing. In the UK, housing supply has not been keeping up with demand. Getting access to housing of any type is becoming increasingly difficult for low-income households.

You are a trainee Quantity Surveyor employed by a renowned international engineering, design, and project/cost management consultancy company. Your employer has asked you to provide professional building quantifications and cost consultancy services for drawings attached to this coursework brief on Blackboard.

Task 1  Traditional Measurement

Using the attached drawings on the Blackboard, manually take off for the following items below using NRM2:

Substructure

Site preparation, excavation work for foundation work, backfilling of excavated materials, concrete in foundation, substructure brick/block work, wall cavity, damp proof membrane, DPC, hardcore, and ground floor slab.

Superstructure 

Walls including cavity, windows, doors, skirting, floor, ceiling finishing, roofing board, roof trusses, and roofing tiles.

Task 2 Contract Documents Preparation
