You are working in a secondary school setting and have been asked to write a job description for a new role. The job is for a subject teacher with additional pastoral responsibilities for Year 7.

The member of staff will be expected to be the first point of contact for both parents and students in Year 7. The school has a high number of pupils with special educational needs and a small number of pupils who are in local authority care, therefore the candidate will need to be able to work effectively with other external agencies such as social workers, educational psychologists and speech and language therapists.

Task 1 Write a job description for the role. In addition to subject knowledge and experience you must also describe the wider professional role to include:

• key aspects of legislation, regulatory requirements and relevant codes of practice
• the teaching/training role and responsibilities
• working with other professionals 
• boundaries between the teaching role and other professional roles
• points of referral to meet the individual needs of learners
• safer recruitment guidance.
