Introduction

The aim of this unit is for learners to gain an understanding of sociological concepts of health and ill health and their application to care practice in health and social care. It will enable learners to gain an understanding of the nature of contemporary society and its influences on the perception of health and ill health. Learners will explore how society is structured in terms of age, gender, ethnicity, social class, family and households and its impact on health and wellbeing.

Scenario

Learners may use their own employment context to write an assignment based on assessment tasks. Assessment tasks are learning outcomes of the unit associated with Assessment Criteria. Assessment criteria are descriptions of requirements a learner is expected to meet to demonstrate that a learning outcome has been achieved. Therefore, you are required to generate sufficient evidence on assessment criteria to meet learning outcomes of the unit within the rules, regulations and standards to achieve credits of the unit. If you are not in employment, please use the following scenario.

Consider you are working a Health and Social Care Manager in the health/social care organisation. In your current job, you are asked to write a report on sociological concept of health and ill health by doing research to health or social care literature (online e.g. NHS website or social care organisation/professional body or existing research reports). You can also use learning materials in your portal. However, you must ensure to write against all following tasks.

Task 1

Describe the theoretical perspectives behind approaches to health and illness by meeting following A.C. (Assessment Criteria)

Task 3

A.C. 3.2. Describe what is meant by social inequality in health and what factors influence it
