Unit Aims
The aim of this unit is to provide learners with the necessary knowledge and understanding to effectively lead and manage people in a business. Learners will develop an awareness of employee motivation, employee relations and performance management. Task 1 of 4 – Assessment Criteria 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, 1.4 and 1.5 are assessed in this task
Instructions
a. Using models and/or diagrams to support your answer and in no more than 150 words, explain at least three different motivational theories.
b. Using one of the theories from a), write a 200 word essay which describes at least four ways in which employees could be motivated.
c. Produce a two column table which;
- lists at least four benefits to a business of motivated employees and
- in no more than 100 words, explains how each of the benefits has a positive impact on a business you are familiar with.
d. Using the same business as above,
- in no more than 150 words, suggest one way in which it could use financial rewards to increase employee motivation and
- in no more than 150 words, suggest one way in which it could use non-financial rewards to increase employee motivation.
You must fully justify your answers to d) above.
e. You represent the workforce of the same business.
You have been asked by your colleagues to contact the business’ management team because they want to be able to work more flexibly, and work from home for part of the week. They have asked you this because they are worried about their well-being and how this will affect their motivation and performance.
Prepare a report, of no more than 500 words, in which you present a case, supported by evidence, to the management team which will convince them to allow workers to work more flexibly and, where possible, work from home.
You must ensure your report focuses on the benefits of flexible and home working to an individual’s wellbeing, as well as their motivation and performance in the workplace.
Task 2 of 4 – Assessment Criteria 2.1, 2.2, 2.3 and 2.4 are assessed in this task

a. Produce a three column table which;
- states at least four factors which influence the employer/employee relationship
- in no more than 100 words, explains how each of the factors can influence the employer/employee relationship within the same business from task 2 and
- states one barrier which would prevent each of these factors from having a positive influence on the employer/employee relations within the same business.
Write a 500 word report which;
- explains at least four benefits to the same business of effective employee engagement and
- suggests at least two ways in which the same business could improve its employee relationships.
You must fully justify your answers to the second part of b) above.

Produce a four column table which;
- states at least four different leadership styles
- in no more than 100 words, explains the key feature of each of these styles
- states at least four management functions and
- in no more than 100 words, explains the purpose of each of these functions.
Write a 400 word report which suggests two ways in which the same business from tasks 1, 2 and 3 could improve how it leads and manages its employees.
You must fully justify your answer to b) above.
