Unit Aims

It is often said that one of the key features of a logistics business is its operations function. As such, it is vital that this function is managed effectively. The aim of this unit is to help learners explore the important relationships between operations management and other functions of a logistics business.

Learning Outcomes and Assessment Criteria

1. Understand the fundamentals of operations management. 1.1 Explain why effective operations  management is important to a logistics business.

3. Know about warehousing and  inventory management. 3.1 Explain the key principles of warehouse   management.

3.4 Describe a logistic business’s inventory management processes.
4. Understand transportation and distribution. 4.1 Explain the role of transport management.

4.2 Explain the importance of effective transport planning to a logistics business.

4.4 Assess the impact of current issues on a logistics business’s transportation and distribution.

Scenario

Operations management is the business function responsible for designing and managing products, processes, services and supply chains.

The operations management team will oversee the use of materials and work alongside key stakeholders within the organisation, such as buyers, production planners and the manufacturing cells, to oversee the supply chain process, from the initial stages of production forecasting and demand planning through to inventory arriving into the warehouse.

You will need to identify a logistics business which has at least a warehousing and distribution operation and is of interest to you so that you are able to examine, through research, its work-related management strategies, practices, processes and/or outcomes.

The following tasks will guide you in your research and what outcomes you need to produce.

Task 1

Produce an essay to indicate you understand the fundamentals of operations management with reference to your chosen business.
The essay must;
● explain why effective operations management is important to the business.

● explain the relationship between the management of the business’ operations and its objectives.
● discuss how the business’ objectives impact of the achievement of its operational objectives.

The submission is in the form of an essay written in Word format. The recommended word limit is 750 words excluding diagrams, references, and appendices.

Using the same business as task 1, you are required to indicate you understand the fundamentals of warehouse management with reference to your chosen business.
You are to produce a presentation in which you must:
● explain the key principles of warehouse management.
● describe the business’s warehouse management processes.
● explain the key principles of inventory management.
● describe the business’s inventory management processes.
Delivery and Submission
The submission is in the form of a presentation. The recommended presentation time is 10 minutes which is equivalent to a word limit of 750 words excluding diagrams, references, and appendices. You are to provide a copy of the notes you use to support the delivery of the presentation.
Referencing
You are expected to use relevant academic and reliable sources, and clearly reference these in your work. Citations should be added to the text and placed at the end in a reference list, using the Harvard referencing style.

Task 4
