Scenario:
As a junior practitioner, you are to deliver two contrasting consultations for varying clients, this could be pre and post massages. Within the consultation you need to consider any contraindications prior to delivering treatments. Full health and safety considerations should be considered and explained to your client prior to treatment commencement.
A practical delivery will be delivered, and professional working practices should be adhered to throughout. Correct technique applications to be applied throughout the massages and the appropriate mediums applied.
Post massage, information should be gathered to formulate a review of your performance to inform you of future changes and adaptations that can be made to your practice. This will also sit nicely with future recommendations for your client if they incur a similar sort of injury occurrence.

To complete the assignment, you must complete the following:
Tasks:
Task 1 (LO3)
You must carry out pre-treatment consultation (subjective and objective) on 2 contrasting Athletes (client A – B). The context of the treatment can be chosen from a pre, post, inter, maintenance or corrective context and must be different for each athlete (contrasting).
You must be able to identify any contraindications (if applicable) and the area for treatment e.g. anterior, posterior, legs, upper back, lower back, shoulders, neck.
They must also identify basic injuries e.g., haematoma, muscle tear, tendon injuries, inflammation, ligament injuries.
As part of the pre-treatment assessment, you must complete client record cards/record of consultation.
The client record card or record of consultation must include the following:
- subjective information e.g., client expectation of treatment, the athlete’s presenting condition
- objective assessment e.g., initial observations, posture assessment, palpation and range of motion findings
- aims and objectives of the treatment
- proposed treatment including area and techniques
- mediums to be used
- post treatment reassessment
- after-care advice
Task 2 (LO3)
Learners must demonstrate safe and effective massage on at least 2 contrasting clients, showing effective use of different techniques, e.g., effleurage, petrissage, frictions, tapotement, vibrations.
You must:
- use correct application of techniques
- maintain correct posture to facilitate effectiveness of treatment
- protect self from injury e.g., correct posture, reinforcement of digits
- use a suitable medium
- work within an appropriate time frame
- demonstrate an appropriate client/therapist rapport
- maintain optimal personal hygiene throughout the treatment and ensure this is thoroughly demonstrated during the practical performance.
Task 3 (LO4)
You the learner must review the sport and exercise massage treatment by gaining feedback from the athletes, self-reflection, and feedback from the Tutor.
You the learner must review their treatment plan and treatment performance, including application (speed, depth, rate) and effectiveness, outcomes, and rapport/relationship with the athletes.
You the Learner must identify areas for improvement and changes they could make to the treatment plan and subsequent treatments.
