The tasks for this unit have been designed to establish your understanding of academic research and writing through an exploration of key concepts and terminology. As a result, the evidence produced by successfully completing the tasks will provide your tutor with an indication that you have the required academic skills to succeed on your learning journey and beyond.

To demonstrate you understand the fundamental academic principles which will support you through your studies, you are to investigate the topic of academic research and writing.

You are required to write a report to evidence your understanding of the following:

  • the meaning of academic research and writing
  • different academic writing conventions
  • different types of academic research

Delivery and Submission

The submission is in the form of a report written in Word format.

The recommended word limit is 500 words excluding diagrams, references, and appendices.

Referencing  

You are expected to use relevant academic and reliable sources, and clearly reference these in your work.

You are to use this topic to:

  • explain the key components of a reliable and valid academic argument relevant to the topic.
  • differentiate between inductive and deductive reasoning which is present in different academic arguments relevant to the topic.
  • suggest an argument structure which you would use if you were presenting an academic argument relevant to the topic. You must justify the suggestion.
