  2. Justify the suitability of several data collection and analysis methods commonly used in health and social care research.
  3. Critically examine research methodologies, designs and methods, evaluating strengths and weaknesses when applied to health and social care.
  4. Assess the ethical rigour of published research in the field of health and social care.
  5. Critically evaluate the presentation of statistical data in published research.

  • Quantitative: enhancing nurses’ well-being (Journal of Nursing Management, 2023)

Required Structure and Marks

Introduction (10 marks) – LO1 and LO2

Make a statement of intent explaining what is to follow. Themes to include:

  • What is meant by evidence-based practice?
  • What is considered to be high-quality evidence?
  • How can we ensure that we are using high-quality sources?

Review of qualitative research (40 marks) – LO3, LO4, LO5

  • Use a critiquing framework and justify your choice of framework.
  • Review a qualitative article; this must include an appraisal of ethics.

Review of quantitative research (40 marks) – LO3, LO4, LO5

  • Use a critiquing framework and justify your choice of framework.
  • Review a quantitative article; this must include an appraisal of ethics.

Appraise your chosen papers with respect to themes such as ethics, population, sampling, recruitment, consent, anonymity, choice of method, validity, reliability, bias, data collection tools, data analytics, and generalisability or transferability. Give a balanced appraisal that recognises both strengths and weaknesses, supported by references to the literature.

Reflective conclusion (10 marks)

  • Summarise the key points of the review.
  • Reflect on what you have learnt that will be specifically useful for your own practice, and why.
  • Explain how you will use the skills you have gained from this module.

Presentation Requirements

  • Word-processed, 1.5 or double line spacing, 10–12 pt sans serif font (e.g. Verdana or Arial); word count on the front cover.
  • Identify yourself by SID number only; use the Front Cover Template.
  • Present the critique as ONE complete piece of work: Front Cover, Introduction, Review of qualitative research, Review of quantitative research, Reflective conclusion, Reference list.
  • Respect confidentiality and anonymity: do not name your place of work, staff or service users.

Need help critiquing your two research papers?

Most students lose marks in this critique by summarising each paper rather than appraising it. Pick one framework per paper (for example CASP for the qualitative study and a quantitative appraisal tool for the survey), justify why it suits the design, then test sampling, consent, bias, rigour or reliability, and the way the statistics are reported against the literature. Ethics must be scrutinised in both reviews, and the reflective conclusion needs a concrete link to your own practice. Our qualitative research methods assignment help can guide your framework choice and Cite Them Right referencing.
