This university module asks health and social care students to show that they can learn from experience by integrating leadership theory with practice. The single reflective report combines a critical analysis of contemporary leadership methods with a reflective account of leading, or experiencing, a change in health or care practice.

Module Learning Outcomes

  1. Critically analyse theories and styles of leadership.
  2. Critically discuss the factors and variables that influence the behaviour of individuals and teams and their performance in organisations.
  3. Critically reflect on your own personal leadership qualities and how they can improve self-management and empower others to influence organisational factors, professional practice and collaborative working.
  4. Critically appraise change management strategies and their relevance to local and national policy development and practice.
  5. Reflect on incidents in practice you were involved in or observed and critically appraise the potential influence of contemporary ethical and effective leadership on them.

Part A (approx. 2,000 words): Methods of Leadership in Contemporary Health or Care (LO1, LO2, LO5)

  • Critically analyse transformational leadership and its impact on followers and on the delivery of health or care services.
  • Compare transformational leadership with at least two other contemporary leadership styles.
  • Explore the differences between contemporary and historical approaches to leadership.
  • Consider the impact of leadership on the behaviour of individuals and teams.
  • Discuss the impact of motivation on team performance.
  • Explore ethical leadership and its impact on teams.
  • Reference accurately using Cite Them Right Harvard.

Part B (approx. 2,000 words): Reflective Account of Leading Change (LO3, LO4, LO5)

Reflect on a change in practice or process you have experienced at work where leadership affected the change. Using a reflective model as the framework, identify how leadership theory and change management theory were used, what you learned about how these principles were applied, and how this learning might influence your future practice. Draw on the leadership analysis from Part A.

  • Evaluate your leadership approach during the change, considering concepts such as ethical leadership and emotional intelligence.
  • Appraise the strengths and weaknesses of your chosen change management model by comparing it with at least one other model.
  • Consider the impact of your leadership on team effectiveness.
  • Analyse your approach to resolving any conflict within the team.
  • Explore the importance of self-awareness and self-management during the change.
  • Reference accurately using Cite Them Right Harvard.

The report must be presented as one complete piece of work, not two separate assignments, and must show evidence of all module learning outcomes.

Need help with your leadership practice report?

This module is marked as one 4,000-word reflective report, so Part A and Part B must connect: the leadership theories you critically analyse in Part A (transformational leadership compared with at least two other contemporary styles, plus ethical leadership and motivation) should reappear as the lens for the change you reflect on in Part B. Choose a real change you experienced, such as a new handover process or an e-rostering roll-out, use a recognised reflective model, compare your change model (for example Kotter or Lewin) with at least one other, and cover conflict, emotional intelligence and self-management with Cite Them Right Harvard references. Our leadership assignment help can guide your analysis, and our academic writing support helps with structure and reflection.
