Assignment Brief:
The assignment is to complete a detailed foundation design for a small project as shown in the appended drawings. and the pile schedule. You are to design the pile number that corresponds to the last two numbers of your student ID. Using the appended borehole information, you are to provide a summary interpretation of the soil properties and conditions, determine and identify your characteristic parameters, and plot the borehole data to provide a suitable design line. Determine the appropriate load cases from the details provided, in accordance with Eurocode 7, to be considered for the foundation design of the piles allocated. (Note: there is no requirement to work together and your submission must be wholly your own individual effort)
Identify suitable piling techniques and diameter based on the ground and load cases determined. Using your design line, other parameters determined from the Borehole data, in accordance with Eurocode 7, complete a table of shaft friction capacity for the appropriate pile technique and parameters using excel. Finally, complete the design of your piles and detail the length and toe level of your piles. Carry out at least one hand calculation to verify the excel analysis and if there are discrepancies you must identify and rectify them. Complete a design risk assessment.
Collate all your calculations, assumptions, assessment of the ground conditions, proposed design solution into a geotechnical design report. You must explain every aspect of your design to ensure that both the client and contractor will understand what is permitted, based on your design. Within your report you must also demonstrate how you have ensured safety by design for the scheme.
Submission Requirements:
You are to upload your completed report and any supporting documentation, such as excel computations & software outputs onto StudyNet in PDF and Excel format before the due date & time. The report should be no more than 2500 words excluding any words within appendices, diagrams or sketches. All diagrams, sketches and calculations may be included within the text or appendices based on how it aids clarity and ease of reading and understanding of the report. Everything must be clearly labelled and cross referenced correctly. The formatting of the report should be in PDF using size 11 Arial font with 1.5 line spacing and standard margins. There is no limit to the number of appendices but even if additional calculations have been carried out only the relevant and cross-referenced appendices should be included. All Excel & software-based calculations must be referenced within the document and clearly identifiable within the submitted Excel sheet. All formulae used must be referenced and stated. DO NOT put your name on any part of your submission. This assignment is worth 25% of the overall assessment for this module.
