Introduction
This unit will provide a guide on the step-by-step approach students and individuals can take to excel in their studies and professional practice. It focuses on developing academic skills like reflective and critical thinking abilities which are essential for personal and academic development.
Our study abilities will develop and grow via comprehension, continuous practice, introspection, trial and error and accepting feedback from others (Stella Cottrell-2016). Through this course, learners will develop the skills they need to excel in academic endeavours at the higher education level.
Task 1: Demonstrate evidence of personal and academic development
1.1 Develop a portfolio of evidence showing development in academic study skills
To complete the requirement of task 1.1 you are required to develop a portfolio that must outline your academic study skills. Further, a chart has been provided to you that allows you to check the box by clicking on it and assign a score of beginner, intermediate, proficient and expert based on your skill level. (Please complete the chart and provide a brief explanation for the score assigned to each skill where necessary).

1.2 Reflect upon a significant learning incident using an acknowledged model
In task 1.2, you need to reflect upon any learning incident you experienced by using reflective models such as Gibbs’ Reflective Cycle or John’s Model of Reflection. Select one of the provided models and explore the factors that motivated you to develop a specific skill. For example, if you chose to improve your proficiency in PowerPoint, discuss the inspiration behind this decision. This could come from your teacher’s introduction to PowerPoint presentations, which you found engaging and motivated you to master the skill.
Task 2: Identify relevant sources of evidence in order to develop reliable arguments
2.1 Collate an annotated bibliography for 3 sources, summarising findings
In task 2.1, you are required to create an annotated bibliography by selecting any three reliable sources relevant to the topic “Dementia and the UK”. For each source, write a citation in the required format and add an annotation below it. Further, in each annotation, briefly summarise the main findings from the source by focusing on the most important points that relate to the topic. This could include the source’s purpose, main arguments, any key insights etc.
2.2 Explain the process by which you can identify relevant sources for an academic piece of work
Whereas, in task 2.2 you are required to describe the steps you followed to find credible, relevant sources for your academic research. To address this you can discuss which reliable online resources you assessed to get a broad understanding of the topic, which research-specific tools you used, how you assessed the reliability and academic importance of each source etc along with covering other steps to gather high-quality sources for academic work.

Task 3: Interpret qualitative and quantitative data presented in research articles
3.1 Evaluate the quality of the research article provided
In task 3.1 support your answer by assessing the overall quality of a research article to determine if it meets the standards necessary for inclusion in academic work. To address this, you can consider the credibility of the author, the journal it was published in, the methods used in the study and the other essential considerations to ensure that the article is high-quality and trustworthy enough for academic use.
3.2 Discuss the relevance of the findings to health and social care practice
For task 3.2, you have to explain how the findings you identified in task 2.1 are applicable to the field of health and social care practice. Use those findings and explain how they could potentially improve health and social care outcomes. You can also discuss the specific ways these findings might be applied by the health care professionals to enhance patient satisfaction, care delivery, decision making etc.
