Rationale for Assignment

The purpose of this assignment is to show your understanding of quantification and costing in order to produce a detailed take-off to estimate and cost a residential dwelling.

You are required to measure each item on the take-off list provided and create a priced Bill of Quantities (BoQ) for a residential project in Yorkshire. Once completed, you will have gained an understanding of the methods for quantification and costing residential substructures and flooring within the New Rules of Measurement guide.

Part 1: Assignment Brief

Assignment Summary and Rationale

The purpose of this report is to show your understanding of quantification and costing in order to produce a detailed take-off to estimate a construction project.

You are required to measure each item on the take-off list provided and create a priced Bill of Quantities (BoQ) for a residential dwelling in Yorkshire.

Assignment Scenario

Your client has asked you to quantify and cost the substructure, ground floor slab, and internal floor finishes for a project in Yorkshire. They have requested that you develop a priced Bill of Quantities (BoQ) in accordance with NRM to understand the estimated cost of the construction works.

Assignment Requirements

  1. Use the drawings provided for the ‘Rivelin Bungalow’ to take off the desired items using traditional of quantification. The work must be submitted in an appropriate take-off format with a list of queries and with reference to NRM2. Provide specification details within your descriptions where required (50%).
    You are required to take off:

    • Foundation (Including extracted material, earthwork support, concrete, footings, DPC, hardcore, and soil backfill)
    • Concrete ground floor slabs (Including hardcore, sand blinding, DPM, concrete slab, insulation, and screed)
    • Internal floor finishes (See finishes schedule)
  2. Create an abstract and priced Bill of Quantities (BoQ) in the NRM breakdown format using Spon’s Architects’ and Builders’ Price Book to price your measure (35%)
  3. Query Sheet (10%)
  4. Presentation (5%)
