Assignment Specification
This module is assessed entirely by a single individual assignment, containing two different elements (Part A and Part B). These will be submitted separately on Canvas but the deadline is the same for both.
In the critical literature review (Part A), the assessment has a dual role: the in-depth exploration of a disruptive technology and its business potential, as well as the information security / ethical challenges the use of such technology might involve. You will be asked to bring these two together in the first element of the assignment, which will be a critical literature review, wherein a reflection of contemporary literature must be provided. As an example, you will select, specialise and explore one disruptive technology in-depth (eg blockchain, 3D / 4D-printing), its business potential, and its associated information security, socio-economic and ethical challenges.
Part A
Select a key topic from the list below and write a critical literature review of 3,000 words (max).
You are generally free to select any contemporary technology topic but if the topic is not included in the list provided below, you should seek approval from the module leader. At least 90% of your references should come from journal articles (with the majority coming from IS journals – e.g. AIS scholars’ basket of eight journals).
List of topics for Part A*
- 3D-Printing
- Augmented Reality
- Cloud Computing
- Mutual Distributed Ledgers (aka blockchain technology) and/or cryptocurrencies
- Information Systems Security (and a concentration on any of its subtopics, including cyber-awareness, insider threats, specific types of attacks like ransomware)
- Mobile Commerce (M-Commerce)
- Social Networks
- Virtual Reality
- FinTech-based Disruptions
- Artificial Intelligence
- Quantum Information Systems
The list above is provisional and additional themes may be provided. Seek approval from the module leader for any other topic.
Additional Information
- You must follow the Harvard referencing style.
- Your review must be written in Times New Roman, 12 font, 1.5 line spacing.
- Read carefully the guidance on plagiarism from the University’s website. Submitting work that is copied and/or not referenced properly could result in being referred to the plagiarism committee and receiving a mark of zero (0).
Overlength Assessments
Please note: The following penalties will be applied to work that is over the specified limit.
- Up to 10% over the specified limit, no penalty applied.
- 10-20% over the specified limit, a penalty of 10% of the available marks for the assessment or reduction to pass mark, whichever is higher.
- 20-50% over the specified limit, the maximum mark awarded will be the pass mark.
- More than 50% over the specified limit, the work will not be marked and a mark of zero will be recorded.

Assignment Submission
Remember, it is your responsibility to submit your assignment on time so make sure you familiarise yourself with the process and allow yourself plenty of time to upload it.
There is a University standard system of penalties for late submission of coursework. If you submit your work late, without having been granted a formal extension or mitigating circumstances, the following penalties will be applied to your work. These are calculated as a percentage of the maximum mark available for the assessment component which has been submitted late.
- Up to and including 24 hours after the deadline, a penalty of 10%
- More than 24 hours and up to and including five working days after the deadline, either a penalty of 10% or the mark awarded is reduced to the pass mark (50), whichever results in the lower mark
- Where work is submitted outside of the stipulated late period (more than five working days late) it will not be marked and a mark of zero will be awarded.
What counts as part of that expectation:
- The assignment length does not include the assignment title or instructions.
- Unless otherwise specified, the published word count must exclude charts, graphs, tables etc included in the assignment.
- Unless otherwise specified, the published word count must exclude references in footnotes, appendices, references lists and bibliographies but must include other footnotes, quotations and in text references and citations.
- Coursework assessment rubrics must instruct students to declare the assignment length, e.g. word count, slide numbers, detailed time on the coversheet where adhering to a word count, presentation time or other stipulation is included as a learning outcome/competency.
